Beard hair loss, causes and what you can do
A patchy or uneven beard is more common than many think. Here we go through why beard hair thins and the options available, including permanent restoration.

A full, even beard is an important part of the look for many, and just like the hair on the head, the beard can thin or grow unevenly. It is more common than you might think, and the cause determines what can be done about it.
Common causes of a patchy beard
- Genetics: the most common explanation. Some areas simply have fewer or inactive follicles, creating gaps or thinner patches.
- Hormones: beard growth is governed by androgens (including DHT). Low hormonal activity in the follicles can cause weak growth.
- Alopecia areata: an autoimmune condition that causes round, patchy bald areas in the beard.
- Scars and skin damage: acne scars, burns or other injuries can knock out follicles locally.
- Age: the beard's density changes throughout life.
What can you do?
For temporary or hormonally driven weak growth, patience, good skincare and in some cases PRP treatment can stimulate the follicles. For alopecia areata, the underlying condition is treated medically and the hair can return on its own.
But where the follicles are missing or have been knocked out, by genetics, scarring or injury, no cream or diet can create new hair. Then a beard transplant is the permanent solution.
How a beard transplant works
Using FUE or DHI technique, healthy follicles are moved from the donor area (usually the back of the head, where the hair is genetically resistant) to the beard. The follicles are placed individually at the correct angle and direction so the result follows the beard's natural growth pattern. After healing, the new strands grow permanently and can be shaved, trimmed and shaped just like the rest of your beard.
