Dandruff and an itchy, irritated scalp are common and usually due to seborrheic dermatitis, a condition where the scalp becomes inflamed, flakes and itches, often linked to an overgrowth of the natural yeast Malassezia. It can also be dry skin or a sensitive scalp reacting to products.
A common question is whether dandruff causes hair loss. The answer is: rarely directly. Dandruff itself does not destroy the follicles. But a long-term inflamed and itchy scalp is not a good environment for hair growth, and severe itching that leads to scratching can cause mechanical damage over time. In addition, an irritated scalp can make it harder to assess and treat other hair loss.
That is why the order matters: a troubled scalp should be calmed before starting treatments such as PRP or planning a transplant. Medicated shampoo (against yeast and inflammation), gentle hair care and sometimes an assessment by a dermatologist usually go a long way. Diet and stress also play a part.
When the scalp is in balance, PRP treatment can support both scalp health and hair growth. At a consultation we look at your scalp and help you first get it calm, so that any further hair treatment has the best possible conditions.
