How long does a hair transplant last? Permanent, but with one important nuance
One of the most important questions before investing in a hair transplant is, of course: does the result last? The short answer is yes, a hair transplant is permanent. But there is a nuance that is absolutely crucial to understand, and that honest clinics should explain clearly.
Why the transplanted hair is permanent
In a hair transplant we move follicles from the donor area, the back and sides of the head. These follicles are genetically resistant to DHT, the hormone that causes hereditary hair loss. When they are moved to a new area they keep their genetic "code" and therefore keep growing exactly as they did at the back of the neck: permanently, for life. The transplanted hair does not fall out due to hair loss.
The important nuance: your existing hair
What can continue to change, however, is your own, non-transplanted hair. If you have ongoing hereditary hair loss, the hair around the transplanted area can keep thinning over the years. This can create unevenness if it is not planned for. That is why an experienced clinic always takes your future hair loss prognosis into account when planning the hairline and density, and why we sometimes advise very young patients against operating too early.
How to preserve the overall result
Many therefore combine the transplant with treatments that preserve the existing hair: PRP treatments, and in some cases medication such as finasteride or minoxidil on a doctor's prescription. That way you protect both the transplanted and your own hair, and the result stays even over time.
At a free consultation we assess your scalp and your long-term prognosis, so that you get a result that looks natural not just next year, but in 10 and 20 years.

Frequently asked questions about hair transplantation
Does a hair transplant last a lifetime?
The transplanted follicles are taken from the donor area, which is genetically resistant to DHT. They therefore keep growing permanently, for life. The result of the transplant itself is lasting.
Can I lose more hair after the transplant?
Yes, but not the transplanted hair. Your existing, non-transplanted hair can keep being affected by hereditary hair loss. That is why many combine with PRP or medication to preserve the whole.
Will I need to redo it later?
Not the transplant itself. Some choose a complementary treatment after several years if their own hair loss has progressed in other areas, but the transplanted hair remains.
