How many grafts do I need? Guidelines by Norwood level

"How many grafts do I need?" is one of the first questions before a hair transplant, and one of the most important, the number of grafts determines both how dense the result is and what the treatment costs.

What a graft is

A graft is a follicular unit, a small natural grouping containing between one and four hairs. We plan in number of grafts, not hairs, because it is the grafts we extract and place. So 2,000 grafts often equals 4,000-5,000 actual hairs.

Guidelines by need

As guidance (the exact number is always measured individually):

  • Restoring a hairline / lighter recession: about 1,500-2,000 grafts
  • Hairline + lighter crown: about 2,500-3,500 grafts
  • Extensive hair loss (large areas): about 3,500-4,500 grafts

This roughly follows the Norwood scale: the higher the Norwood level, the more grafts are needed for full coverage.

Why more is not always better

The donor area is a limited resource. A responsible clinic does not maximise the number of grafts, but places them where they make the biggest aesthetic difference, and saves capacity for future needs. "Topping up" maximally at the first treatment can give a dense result today but problems later.

How we measure

At the consultation we use a trichoscope (microscope camera) to measure the donor's density and calculate how many grafts you have available and need. You get a binding price based on the actual number.

Frequently asked questions about pricing

How many grafts do I need?

It depends on the area and degree of hair loss. As a guideline: hairline 1,500-2,000, hairline + crown 2,500-3,500, extensive hair loss 3,500-4,500. The exact number is measured with a trichoscope at the consultation.

Are more grafts always better?

No. The goal is natural density with regard to the donor's capacity, not the maximum number. Good planning places the grafts where they make the biggest aesthetic difference.

What is the difference between grafts and hairs?

A graft is a follicular unit that can contain 1-4 hairs. So 2,000 grafts often equals 4,000-5,000 hairs. We plan in grafts because that is what we move.
