Microneedling at home vs at a clinic, are dermarollers safe?

Dermarollers and home microneedling are sold in every skincare shop, often with promises of clinic results at a fraction of the price. The truth is more nuanced, and some of the marketing is downright risky.

Two completely different things

It is important to distinguish between short and long needles. Short home rollers (under 0.5 mm) really do no deeper collagen stimulation, their benefit is mainly to temporarily improve the absorption of skincare products. They are relatively safe if kept clean. Longer needles (those that mimic clinic treatment) reach deeper, and that is where the risks begin.

The risks of home use

The real collagen effect requires a needle depth that also increases the risks: infection if the equipment is not sterile, uneven results, irritation and in the worst case scarring if you go too deep, too often or on the wrong areas. At home there is no sterile environment, correct technique or professional assessment of your skin.

What clinic treatment adds

At a clinic, sterilised or single-use equipment, correct and adapted needle depth, anaesthesia and an assessment of your skin type and any contraindications are used. That gives both a better and more even result and a considerably lower risk. The effect can also be combined with PRP, which is not possible at home.

Our advice

Feel free to use a short, clean home roller for better product absorption if you like, but let the deeper, collagen-stimulating treatments be done at a clinic. At a free consultation we go through what suits your skin.

Frequently asked questions about skin care

Are home dermarollers safe?

Short home rollers (under 0.5 mm) are mainly for better absorption of skincare and are relatively safe if kept clean. Longer needles that mimic clinic treatment are risky at home, risk of infection, scarring and uneven results. The real collagen effect requires a depth that belongs in a clinic.

What is the difference from clinic treatment?

At a clinic, sterile equipment, the right needle depth, anaesthesia and an assessment of your skin are used. That gives both a better effect and lower risk than home use. Hygiene and depth are what matter.

Can I damage my skin with a dermaroller?

Yes, with incorrect use, too deep, too often or with poor hygiene it can cause infections, irritation and in the worst case scarring. Be careful and keep everything clean, or let a clinic do the deeper treatments.
